Google’s Search Engine Optimization Guide

Posted on November 17, 2008, under SEO.

Search Engine Optimization is still a taboo to many. Bloggers, web developers and webmasters in general are in pain when it comes to do some SEO optimization to their sites - specially because of all the misleading information out there.

Because of this, Google has finally stepped out into the spotlight to release their very own Seach Engine Optimization Guide to help those new to SEO improve their sites (why did they take so long to do this, anyway?).

On this ebook, you’ll find info on:

  • Metatags optimization
  • Improving your permalinks for SEO
  • Best practices for using headlines
  • How to make effective use of robots.txt
  • Why you should be aware of rel=”nofollow” for links
  • etc.

While I found it a good read, Google’s SEO Starter guide just contains a few basic ideas on SEO which more experienced bloggers are already aware of. However, I strongly suggest everyone to read it and keep it around for future references.

Have you read it yet?

SEO & Friendly URLs

Posted on August 14, 2008, under SEO.

Hi peeps,

SEO Friendly URLs. I’ve seen several forum threads and blog posts about this - so why not have my share of what my experiences are about it?

One year ago, I decided to write a Php-based blog system as a personal project to improve my coding skills and learn more about Php -yeah, back then I didn’t know about the existence of Wordpress- and I’m glad to say that I managed to create a very nice one! However, I noticed that my blog posts were barely being indexed by Google. I was scratching my head and thinking “WTF?! Maybe I did something wrong?”. It took me a couple of weeks to find out that even as advanced web crawling technology is today, most of Search Engines are still facing problems to index dynamic web pages. Damn. That were bad news. Luckily for me, a couple of days later I found out about SEO Friendly URLs.

You keep talking about this SEO-Friendly-URL thing, what is that?

The thing with dynamic pages is that their actual URL doesn’t exist at all. They are created on-the-fly based on a query string parameter passed to the browser (eg. http://www.somesite.com/catalog.php?id_of_article=1). So, if they do not exist, how can Google or any other SE pick them up? (more…)

Paid Links - Beware!

Posted on June 21, 2008, under SEO.

Hi guys,

Paid LinksI’ve witnessed a lot of discussion about paid links, lately. Is it right to buy / sell text links? Why do you do it? PageRank? better SERP? etc etc. Logically, you’ll get tons of differing opinions to these issues since everyone has his/her own perspective about it.

It’s a fact that Google hates paid links. So do the rest of the SEs. They think that links should be built naturally so if they catch a paid link, both the site and the targeted URL will get a negative hit from them affecting their SERP and ranking. If what you want is traffic and pageviews then you’ll be fine, but if you’re after getting a good PR then you may consider yourself screwed up. (more…)
