“If you want to rank in search engines, then you need to focus on SEO”. That is a phrase that can be seen almost everywhere in the blogosphere. And it’s true. Optimizing your sites for search engines is vital for success nowadays. However, how does all this SEO optimization thing goes?
This humble post of mine pretends to be a quick, practical guide on How to SEO Optimize your sites. Don’t expect any advanced stuff, though, since I’m only covering some practical examples on SEO optimization - sometimes it’s best to stick to the basics.
SEO Optimization Guide
- SEO and Site Validation:
Validating your sites is not entirely essential to SEO. However, a lousy code structure might be keeping web spiders from parsing your code correctly. I won’t extend myself on this point since I’ve already posted an entry on Site Validation some time ago. Here’s also a great article on this topic at SearchEngineGuide.com: An Argument for Website Validaton. - SEO Troubleshooting:
Assuming that you don’t have any validation issues -or that you have already corrected them-, it’s time to run a small diagnosis on your site to check for SEO issues on your site. You can either do this by yourself, or as I suggest, use any of the free SEO Tools out there. I recommend WebSiteGrader.com for the job. You also need to check that your site does not violate any of Google’s Webmaster Guidelines, not because Google rules the Internet or something -not yet at least- but because these rules applies for all search engines in general. - Fixing issues:
Once you have identified all potential issues in your site, you should spend some time fixing them (eg. adding alt tags to images when required, using headings properly, etc.). Again, WebSiteGrader is a great tool for identifying these issues (no, this is not a paid review. This tool really deserves your attention!)
Happy SEOing!

Hmm, you covered onsite optimization in short. Good one.
But, I’d like to comment on this line : “Optimizing your sites for search engines is vital for success nowadays.” I beg to differ. Not necessary that you SEO properly to get success, be it monetization with sites, or traffic rankings or popularity. Yeah, it gives the extra bit of traffic.
Short, effective and straight to the point!!! Code validation is something people leave to check out in their free time. Its especially difficult or even unavoidable to escape this issue with sites having heavy use of images, flash and videos. Even some of the so called “premium themes and templates” come with loads of non-validated codes out of the box. But if you don’t wanna give yourself any reason for failing in SEO, site validation should be one of the top priorities…
@Forsaken: yeah, it should be. While not really necessary to SEO, Site validation should be considered important. We should make it easy for web crawlers to index our contents.
@Swastik: I understand your point. However, that extra bit of traffic can determine whether you sell or not.
